Published: 2015 Pages: 179 Synopsis: “The ghosts that wander among the living do not haunt in the traditional sense; instead, they plague the innocent with disease, deformity and addiction. And once a ghost finds its victim, it will haunt them for a lifetime... or kill them quickly.
After George gets ill, the dreams begin. Suppressed memories are triggered, allowing him to see ghosts, and a deeply buried instinct emerges. George finds out he can kill these monsters, and heal their victims. The ability to save lives is something George cannot ignore, but it soon becomes an obsession and begins to eat away at his sanity.
His quest for understanding leads him to new friends and allies, and exposes him to enemies he could have never imagined. In the end, can you really ever kill something that’s already dead?” Rating: *****
I received a free copy of What Haunts Me in exchange for an honest review.
While recovering from the flu, George sees ghostly apparitions which appear near someone with a disability or illness. When George touches the apparition, they disappear in a swirl of grey smoke and the person is cured of their disability or ailment. Such a good idea, and one which my brief introduction doesn’t do any justice.
Written in the first person with an immediately likeable protagonist; this was a masterclass in storytelling. I loved the way the backstories of the various characters fitted together seamlessly. The twists and revelations were perfectly timed with enough time between them for the reader to get their head around each new development and reflect on how that affected what they already knew but with not too much time between that the reader got bored. Absolutely spot on!
Expertly and masterfully written with an old-fashioned tone, which mirrored the old-fashioned apparitions that appeared to George. Despite being a ghost story, I found What Haunts Me to be a cosy and comforting read.
The first in the Ghost Killer series from Margaret Millmore, What Haunts Me is an incredibly strong start to what I am sure will be a thoroughly enjoyable series.
